423.13.3 : MORE PROBLEMS OF TRANSLATION OF FORMS

423.13.3.1 : AIRLINES
The forms used by the official Airlines are bilingual. All other documents such as boarding ticket, flight timings, encashment certificate, etc. pose several translation problems as listed below:

i)
Error in Spelling and Concordance
The Hindi used in these documents consists of such usages:
Date of journey yaatraa kaa taarik
Here, instead of "kaa" "ki" should have been used.

ii)
Incorrect Usage
a)
duurabhaaSaa for duurabhaaS (phone)
b)
aik for ek (one)
c)
samaayojanaa for samaayojan (adjustment)

iii)
Coining of new words
raddikrit TikaT for radd kii gayiii TikaT

The above coinage has two problems: First, radd karnaa stands for cancellation and raddi means "wastage". Moreover, it is absurd to use a Sanskrit suffix "krit" with a word from Persian "raddi". Instead of this, coining of a simple phrase "radd kii huii / gayii TikaT" would have been better.

iv)
Problem of Translation
Another problem is with English terms written in Devanagri which show clear negligence:
konTar kaaunTar for Counter
sTashan sTeshan for Station
ekjekyutiw ekzikyutiw
(ekzekTiv)
for Executive

v)
Specific Use
Quite often, the Hindi version of the terms used in the Airlines literature is very specific, and must be used only in a particular / specific context:

Domestic Services raaSTriiya uRaan?
International Services antarraaSTriiya uRaan?
Flight Timings uRaan samayaavalii
Main Booking Office mukhya aarakSaN Kendra

The use of Domestic for "National" and Services for "flights" is a technical one. A translator has to keep this in his mind.
