423.11.2.1  : BANKING DOCUMENTS

As all the transactions of the Banks depend on sound accounting principles, their documentation is a necessary work. Over the years, this work has resulted in numerous documents.

These documents can be divided into two formal categories. Those in the first category are one of the intra-Banking operations. Some of the prominent intra-Banking documents are ledger, case book, balance sheet etc. The other category deals with the documents that a customer has to use or face when dealing with Banks, including Bank Pass Book, Cheque Book, Withdrawal slip, Deposit slip, proforma for Demand Draft, etc.

The Banking operates around the Vouchers, Ledgers and Pass Books and these are almost always bilingual. Moreover, Vouchers are the most important documents in any Banking system because the internal structure of working is dependent on them.

Generally, a Banking Voucher is written in two circumstances; first, when you want to withdraw some amount or secondly, when you intend to deposit some amount in your account. Any entry is Banking business is by three methods - cash entry, clearence, and transfer. All the three are equally used in Banking i.e. credit and debit. Another important item in Banking is ledger, which is also classified into credit and debit.

423.11.2.2.  : NATIONALISATION OF BANKS

Nationalisation of Banks was an important historic movement in the contemporary Indian History. This act had an influence on translation activity, too. Prior to this all the Banking functions used to be in only English because of the British imperialism in India. Earlier, Banks had nothing to do with rural masses. But now the situation is totally changed after nationalization of banks, as it has facilitated banking to farthest people in rural areas of India. It is but natural that Indian languages should take their place in such a changed situation for the benefit of majority of the Indian people.

As you already know the rural folk in India are not only economically deprived, they lack any chance to improve their way to prosperity and progress. Our age old rural economic system is full of all evils of lending money to one generation against repayment by several generations due to lack of literacy and simplicity. This had given rise to bonded labours. Moreover, earlier the villagers had no other economic help except the village Mahajan. This situation changed in 1969 with the Nationalistion of Banks, leading to a new set up of Rural Banks (called 'graamiiN' Banks) and Agriculture Banks.
