The mail
foucs of this couse entitled "Lexicon for Translators
and Term Planning' is on the 'lexicon' - the most reliable
tool invariable used by all translators.Though lexicography
as an independent area of study has a wider scope in
language development, language learning, language acquisition
and so on, the unit writers of this course were asked
to focus more on the use of dictionaries in translation
activites in paritcular than on the other areas. The
course also includes various aspects of term planning,
a major activity in the modernisation and standardization
of any langauge, the aspect which eventually will help
the translator in achieving his/her goal.
The material
pertaining to both the aspect of the course is presented
here in a cohesive manner ensuring that it will sustain
the interest of the participants coming from an enormous
variety of backgrounds. The 16 units included in this
course will give an opportunity to the participants
to have both the theoritical and practical insights
and experiences into the various aspects of the making
and use of the dicitonaries and the terminological lexicon
as well as the treatment of languages in the translation
activity. All the important methods - from traditional
to modern have been included so as to make the paritcipant
aware of the effective use of both these aspects. The
questions included under each unit are so arranged that
the paritcipant will be able to instruct himself/herself
and at the same time these willl initiate him/her for
further reading.
The co-operation received
from the unit writers is praise-worthy. We are grateful
for the guidance received from Prof. U.N. Sing who have
preceived and carried out most of the work involved
in structuring the syllabus of the whole course and
who is also a source of constant inspiration.
Our sincere thanks are
also duve to PVSR Murthy, B. Avinash, A. Apparao, Darius
Charles, B. Satyanarayana, M.Hari Prasad and others
in the section for distance education who have provided
every sort of technical and ministerial support in carrying
out the enormous work. |
