413.3.7: SUMMARY

In this unit, you have learnt about the nature and classification of dictionaries. At first, a number of definitions of the term 'dictionary' were considered. Then we talked about the criteria based on which could possibly attempt a classification of dictionaries. After that, different types of dictionaries were talked about in greater detail. We began with the distinction of theoretical and practical dictionaries. We then moved on to monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. The bilinguals' dictionaries were further sub-typologized. Subsequently, we presented to you the salient points that make an encyclopaedia a different entity from a dictionary. Finally, we ended with the differences between a synchronic and a diachronic dictionary with a further categorization of the latter into specialized etymological vx. a little more general historical dictionaries. The unit ended with a section on other types of special dictionaries. After reading this unit, you will be able to be ready to understand the more detailed discussions on the principles of lexicon building and on the relationship between lexicon and translation in the subsequent units.
