QUESTIONS:
1. What is the subject matter of phonetics and what are its different branches?
2. Write short notes on the following: waves, cycles, frequency, amplitude, timber.
3. Distinguish between:
(a) pitch and frequency,
(b) loudness, intensity and amplitude,
(c) quality and timber.
4. What is resonance? What are filters? Describe their role in the production of speech sounds.
5. Describe the organs of speech. Illustrate with suitable diagrams. What roles do these organs play in the production speech?
6. What are the different airstream mechanisms and how do they interact with the various states of the glottis to produce speech sounds?
7. What is a syllable? Describe two different theories of the syllable, their strengths and shortcomings?
8. How is a syllable structured? What are its different parts? What is the difference between open and closed syllables?
